Fireplace Maintenance

Fireplaces are wonderful things. They help the keep rooms warm and cozy as well as add style and beauty to the home. Fireplaces do need to be maintained for several reasons. Good fireplace maintenance helps the fireplace itself work more efficiently. Good fireplace maintenance is also essential for safety.

Fireplace maintenance will vary greatly. The amount of care needed will depend largely on the style and size of the actual fireplace. Today, Gas fireplaces are quite a common feature in homes. They offer the look and warmth of a traditional fireplace with out all of the cleaning and mess. These types of fireplaces do need checking. Good gas fireplace maintenance includes checking the fan and thermostat. Check the gas pilot safety system. Make sure there is always good ventilation. Finally, paint the fire box if needed. These tips will help insure that the Gas fireplace operates safely.

Older homes may have the more traditional stone fireplace or stove. These do require a fair amount of fireplace maintenance to keep them running safely. One should have the chimney inspected at least once a year by a certified chimney sweep. A chimney cap should be installed to keep animals and other debris out. The ashes should be removed and the fireplace cleaned about once a week. Ashes should be stored in a non-combustible container. Any loose brick or cracks should be repaired as soon as possible. Finally the glass doors should be cleaned frequently.

Finally, some today are opting for outdoor fireplaces. The amount of maintenance required for these depends largely on the type of material it is made from. To reduce the amount of fireplace maintenance try to get one made from a material that can withstand the elements. There are some metal fireplaces that can do this but are not as easy on the eye. Stone fireplaces are excellent but not very easy on the wallet.

Fireplace maintenance is essential for safety and efficiency. By doing simple checks and keeping certain areas clean. The fireplace will work well and the home will be safe.
