Chimineas
When we think of fireplaces we immediately associate the chimney. Most of our experience with chimneys is that famous scene in Mary Poppins with the two lead actors dancing on the roofs of homes in London. Chimneys are vitally important to the effective running and safety of the fireplace. Despite the type of chimney that exists in the home, certain safety measures have to be practiced for everything to function properly.
Chimney safety is crucial. Every year houses go up in flames largely due to a fire in the chimney. Generally these can be avoided with some common sense and a few safety checks. Chimneys can get blocked with creosote when they are used frequently. This is the leading cause of most chimney fires. This is so easily avoided with the practice of a few safety tips.
One of the first things a home owner should do is have their chimney checked annually by a certified chimney sweep. They will insure that the chimney is up to standard and is safe. They will also offer advice and guidance as to future chimney care. They may seem expensive but keep in mind that they only are needed once a year. This is a small price to pay when one considers what is at stake.
When using the fireplace, try to use only well seasoned hardwoods. These reduce the amount of smoke and soot that will accumulate in the chimney. This in turn will reduce the chances of the chimney becoming blocked and will further reduce the chances of chimney fires.
Home owners may want to consider installing a chimney cover. Cast iron chimney caps are generally the best. This will keep debris from falling into the chimney which will reduce the chance of fires. They will also keep small animals from entering the chimney.
Finally, home owners should have their chimneys water proofed. Water may seem harmless however it can cause damage. Concrete chimneys can loose the amount of heat storage where cast iron chimneys can rust. Waterproofing can reduce the chances of both of these conditions.
The chimney is incredibly important to the home. If maintained well it will keep the fireplace functioning well and the home warm. If neglected it can be hazardous.
