Home Heating-Cooling

Homes in centuries past had to rely on wood and a fireplace for their main source of heat. The fireplace kept the home warm and also, in larger homes provided a place to cook food. As the years past and technology grew the fireplace was no longer relied upon for the sole source of heat. However, they still remained in many homes to provide additional warmth as well as a gathering place.

Most older homes today likely still have a fireplace. Many are boarded and bricked up but with some effort they can be found and restored. In the 60’s and 70’s there was a push to go modern and new homes were being built without fireplaces. Older homes were being redesigned and the fireplace was removed or covered up.

The fireplace today is making a huge comeback. Many new homes are being built to once again include a fireplace. Sometimes these are for decorative reasons and others to cut the costs of heating and fuel. For those wanting to save money on their heating bills a wood burning stove is an excellent option. These store heat and are much more efficient than a standard fireplace. They are capable of heating an entire large sized room on their own.

Woodstoves are available through most fireplace stores. They are designed for today’s home and home design. For those that want to go authentic, there are old woodstoves and wood stove accessories available through reclamation yards. Before purchasing one of these make sure that it is appropriate for your home and meets all fire and safety regulations. Chances are they will if sold through a licensed merchant but it never hurts to be safe.

For those that want to rustic, cozy style in their home, a stone fireplace could do the trick. Again, these are available through most fireplace stores and outlets. These look magnificent in older style farm homes and help bring the home back to its former glory. All of your fireplace tools and surrounds should be on hand in the shop as well.

The fireplace may have changed use slightly over the past 150-200 years however they are as popular today as ever. Whether for decorative or money saving purposes the fireplace can add style and charm to any home. The right fireplace can cut hundreds off of your fuel bill and help your decorate your home in the style it was intended.
